Miller, Patterson Take Podiums at Sun Valley SuperTour
Last Updated: 07.Dec.2015
Green Racing Project skiers had a successful weekend with several podiums at the second weekend of USSA SuperTour racing in Sun Valley, ID. Low snow conditions threatened to move the venue up to 8,000 ft., but an army of shovelers was able to ready the Lake Creek trail system in time to hold the classic sprint and 10/15k mass start classic.
Saturday’s classic sprint started off well with all 5 GRP skiers making the top 30 rounds. Kaitlynn Miller led the charge winning the women’s qualifier, with Caitlin Patterson just behind her in 2nd, Liz Guiney in 4th, and Heather Mooney in 18th. Alex Howe also made the men’s heats with a 16th in the qualifier. The women continued to dominate the rounds, with Kaitlynn and Caitlin both winning their quarterfinals and Heather taking 2nd in her quarter to advance to the semifinals. Liz fell on a corner in her quarterfinal heat and ended her day with a 13th place overall. Heather just missed making lucky loser in her semifinal, taking 8th overall on the day. The real excitement was in the women’s A Final, where Kaitlynn and Caitlin battled for the podium and ended up 2nd and 3rd, respectively behind winner Becca Rorabaugh of APU. Alex ended up 26th overall, placing 6th in his quarterfinal.
Sunday’s 10/15k mass start classic races were held on a multi-lap 2.2k course that wound through open fields, meaning both spectators and athletes could see the entire race unfold. Off the start, APU’s Chelsea Holmes and Caitlin Patterson broke away from the field. Caitlin made her way onto the podium once again, taking 3rd after Rorabaugh put in a late surge to take 2nd. Kaitlynn Miller took 6th place, Liz Guiney was 9th, and Heather Mooney was 22nd. Alex Howe sat out the men’s race to ready for upcoming biathlon races in Canmore, Alberta.
