Mountain bike racing returns to the Craftsbury Outdoor Center! Join us August 15, 2021 for the Black River Grand Prix, a celebration of big loops, varied terrain, and fun on bikes in the woods. The format is simple: mass start, one big lap. This ain’t XCO, this is VT mountain biking - flow, tech, jank, doubletrack, and even a dirt road or two - there’s something for everyone.
The field will head off at 9am on a ~25k (~16mi) course featuring nearly all the riding the Center has to offer. The race never loops back into the stadium, so once you’re gone, you’re gone. First one back wins. We’re playing it close to the vest when it comes to the course layout, but rest assured almost all of it will be fun (what’s a race without a little suffering, right?).
Questions? Email bikes@craftsbury.com for answers (and maybe a little snark thrown in for good measure).
Mass Start rollerski biathlon race. Four shootings with five 1.3k Dinosaur Loops, possibility of shorter/flatter kids loop. Option to carry rifles or not. 10:00am zero, 11:00 am start. Starts will depend on number of registrants. Pre-registration is required, $5. Registration. More details. Questions? Email biathlon@craftsbury.com.
The Outdoor Center is proud to play host to the 16th edition of The Bitter Pill, brought to you by the Green Mountain Adventure Racing Association. Not sure what adventure racing is? We’ll let the GMARA folks explain it in their own words:
The Bitter Pill is a summer adventure race for teams of two or three. We will be holding the 16th Bitter Pill in on Saturday, August 14th, 2021.
This race features summer disciplines like hiking, biking, and time on the water – as well as requiring you to continually navigate. We are known for being able to really challenge experienced teams while providing a great race for the first-timers. If you have never done an adventure race before, this is a great way to get started.
What’s the short description of this event? Let’s put it this way: we’ll get your team out into the woods and on the water, doing different activities, navigating with a map, and going to places you never would have otherwise. You’ll have an incredible, unique experience with other teams there to do the same. The competition is truly with the course – you’ll go as fast and far as you want to, all with a goal of making it to the finish and seeing as much of the course as possible.
Teams do not need support crews for this event. Outside of what is provided by the race organizers, teams must be self-sufficient. This is an adventure, after all!
We will be following a strict set of COVID-related protocols to keep racers and volunteers safe. These will not prevent you from having an amazing day outdoors.

Our summer rollers biathlon race series will kick off with a pursuit style race! The pursuit will start at 15 second intervals, based on a magic formula determined by Race Director Ethan. Missed shots incur a trip around the penalty loop. For ages U15 and up, the course will be a total of approximately 7.5k, while U13’s will race a shorter (and flatter) loop of approximately 3.75k. In order to participate in these races, individuals must be proficient on their roller skis, though they do not need to race with their rifles on their backs.
Zero - 2:00pm-2:50 all racers
Race Start - 3:00pm
Shooting Format:
U13 - P (prone target), P (prone target), P (standing target), P (standing target)
