JR/BKL bikers at 12h of Millstone
This summer we've worked hard to include more biking opportunities for the junior ski kids, and it's been a BLAST! At the end of July, some of the participants and families competed in Barre, at the 12 hours of Millstone, a mountain bike relay race. The object is to accumulate as many laps as possible during the 12 hours, but functionally, it's a great way to hang out all day, ride bikes, camp and just have a great time.
There were three teams with Craftsbury ties toeing the line. The Red-N.E.K.s (Linda Ramsdell, Sheldon Miller, Anica and Xavier Koontz Miller) represented in the 4 person family category. Happy-Friggin-Birthday (Chris and Meredith Young) celebrated one team member's birthday by racing as a two person team (ouch). The J.A.C.C. Attack (Jack Young, Avery Ellis, Callie Young and Clare Ellis...get it?) were the brave participants in the 4 person junior team.
The gun went off and the teams all loved the course at the old quarries in Websterville - 10k of dips, rocks, roots and fun! The day warmed up, as did the competition, both in the larger race as well as within the groups. Fueling and recovery was handled in a small tent complex the three teams shared. After a long day in the saddle, the Craftsbury teams brought home the hardware, with JACC attack winning their division, the Red-N.E.K.s grabbing the silver in their class, and Happy-Friggin'-Birthday still talking to one another - victories all around.
While we scarfed down bbq and scoped the sweet swag, plans were already hatched for the 2014 version of the event. Think we can get a GRP team together? What about the under-represented Junior boys? Here's hoping next year has an even bigger and better Craftsbury presence!
