Our dining hall uses much more food than we can grow ourselves. We purchase as much food as we can from local Vermont farms for a number of reasons. First, sourcing food locally reduces the associated carbon footprint of transportation and less transport time allows for fresher food. Buying from local farms means that we can get to know the farmers and get a better idea of their practices. As much as possible, we source from organic farms, but sometimes non-certified farms use equally as sustainable practices. We also feel good about purchasing from the farms and small food business that support our neighbors and keep Vermont’s rural economy alive and healthy.

We are a member of the Vermont Fresh Network, Vermont’s farm and chef partnership organization. We’re proud to say that in 2019 we have received their Gold Barn Award that is given to the top buyers of local food in the network.
