CSC Juniors at Biathlon Regional Cup #1

The first Eastern Regional Cup race of the 2021-2022 biathlon season took place at the Outdoor Center on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s race was a “Scramble” and Sunday’s was a Short Individual. More than 60 racers showed up each day!

Saturday’s Scramble race was designed after the first, or scramble, leg of a biathlon relay. The original plan was a mass start, where athletes would ski one loop, shoot prone and use spare rounds for any missed targets, ski another loop, shoot standing using any needed spare rounds, then finish with a final ski loop. But, race entries and mother nature had different plans! With more than 60 entries and daylight hours being so limited, we changed the format slightly to have a short penalty loop rather than spare rounds. Instead of one giant mass start, we had four wave starts of up to 15 people, sorted by age and gender. U13’s and U15’s skied a 3k course while Youth and above skied 6k.

Instead of a penalty loop, a 30 second time penalty was added for each missed shot. The U13’s and U15’s had a mass start, while everyone else started at 30 second intervals.
