Juniors Ski to Strong Finishes at the Quarry Road Eastern Cup

This past weekend, many of the Craftsbury juniors made the trip to the Quarry Road trails in Waterville, Maine for the second Eastern Cup of the season. The weekend includes two exciting races: skate sprinting and classic mass starts.
Saturday was for sprinting, which is always a long but fun day. On the boys side, in the qualifying round, Noah Eckstein led the way in 52nd (15th U18), followed by Matthew Lawlor in 64th (18th U18), Alexander Warner was 71st (22nd U18), Will Seivwright was 79th (24th U20) and Henry Hoffert was 84th (26th U20). For the U16 boys, Griffin Wright was 86th (6th U16), Finn Sweet was 91st (7th U16), Bjorn Westervelt was 126th (19th U16), and Jack Young was 130th (21st U16). Griffin and Finn both raced in the U16 heats, where Griffin ultimately finished 4th and Finn was 10th.
The girls had a strong sprint day, battling it out with older competitors for top spots. In the qualifier, Avery Ellis was 10th (6th U20), Alex Lawson was 15th (8th U20), Phoebe Sweet was 19th (1st U18), and Callie Young was 36th (5th U18). Anica Koontz- Miller was 52nd (10th U18), Madeline Strasser was 85th (20th U18), Jordi Kulis was 102nd (30th U18), and Claire Ellis was 118th (35th U18). For the U16’s, Adrienne Remick was 94th overall and the 20th U16 while Sydney Kulis was 30th and the 31st U16. Callie moved on to the U18/U20 heats, where she took the win! Alex, Avery and Phoebe competed in the open heats where they ultimately finished 5th, 12th, and 20th.
Sunday brought mass start classic racing, beginning with the U16’s, who all raced 5k. Griffin Wright led the way in 3rd, followed by Finn Sweet in 8th. Jack Young was 19th and Bjorn Westervelt was 22nd. For the girls, Adrienne Remick was 13th and Sydney Kulis was 37th. The women raced 10k, where Alex was 7th (1st U20) and Phoebe was 10th (1st U18). Callie was 14th ( followed by Avery in 17th (6th U20). Anica was 36th (9th U18), Jordi 57th (16th U18), Madeline 63rd (17th U18), and Claire was 75th (22nd U18).
The men raced a grueling 15k, where Noah was the first Craftsbury junior in 51st (11th U18), followed by Henry in 68th (18th U20) and Will Seivwright in 71st (17th U18). Matthew Lawlor was next in 81st (22nd U18) and Alexander Warner was 84th (23rd U18).
Congratulations to this hard working crew! The next Eastern Cup will be held January 28th and 29th at the Rikert Nordic Center in Ripton, VT.
