GRP Strikes Gold at Holland Beker in Amsterdam
Last Updated: 01.Jul.2014
Fresh off their qualification for the World Championships later this year, Josh Konieczny and Austin Meyer travelled with the rest of Team USA from the second World Cup in France to the Holland Beker Regatta in Amsterdam. This regatta brings together international competition without a world championship berth on the line, and was also an excellent opportunity to get race experience on the course where the world championships will be held in August.
Josh and Austin raced on Sunday in the men’s open double, where they won their heat by leading from wire to wire to advance to the afternoon’s final. Their road to the top in the final was not quite as clear-cut, with the duo third off the line to some of the more powerful heavyweight combinations. However, both were able to use their fitness through the body of the race to be less than a second off first at the halfway mark and to take the lead with 500m to go. Crossing first in an extremely fast time of 6:13, the duo would take home their first international medal and a win at the regatta. Both will return to the US now to train up for the 2014 World Championships on the same course in Amsterdam from the 24th-31st of August. Good luck to both of them and we’ll keep you posted on the progress of all the GRP rowers this summer!
