GRP Ski Weekend Update

Caitlin Patterson going for the win at the UVM Carnival at Trapp's in Stowe, VT

Last Updated: 26.Jan.2015

Green Racing Project skiers were busy last weekend competing at home and abroad. GRP skier Ida Sargent continued her World Cup season in Rybinsk, Russia, where organizers held a 3 day mini-tour. Meanwhile, several of the domestic GRP skiers raced a little closer to home at the UVM Carnival in Stowe, VT.

Although temperatures were frigid for the World Cup mini-tour in Rybinsk, it didn’t stop the US team from having one of their strongest weekends of the season. Ida didn’t race the 10k skate, but her teammate and fellow Vermonter Liz Stephen took 2nd place, which is the highest placing ever for a US female cross country skier in distance. The next day in the freestyle sprint, Ida qualified in speedy fashion, taking the 5th spot. In the rounds she just missed making the semifinals, finishing the day in 13th, her top skate sprint result of the season. The last event of the weekend was a 15k skiathlon, and Ida was 35th. The big news of the weekend was the announcement of the World Championships Team which will be representing the US in Falun, Sweden in February. Ida prequalified for the team by virtue of her World Cup ranking, and on Monday her spot became official. Congratulations to Ida on the team naming, we can’t wait to follow the racing action in February!

Back in Vermont, several of the GRP skiers competed in the UVM carnival as a tune-up race for the upcoming SuperTours in Craftsbury. Racing against the top Eastern College skiers, Gordon Vermeer and Andrew Dougherty placed 4th and 7th, respectively, in the 15k classic mass start. Caitlin Patterson was the sole GRP representative in the women’s 10k classic, and she won by a comfortable margin over Katherine Ogden of Stratton Mountain School. Gordon, Andrew, and Caitlin will be joined by their other GRP teammates in the SuperTour races in Craftsbury this coming weekend on January 30th and February 1st. Ida now has a small break between now and the next World Cups in Ostersund, Sweden on February 14th. Stay tuned for updates from the SuperTours!
