Former GRP Athletes Compete at World Rowing Championships

John and Ben training on Great Hosmer Pond for World Champs

Last Updated: 05.Oct.2017

This past week the Green Racing Project had five former athletes representing the United States down in Sarasota, Florida at the World Rowing Championships. Held for the first time in the US in 25 years, we had some fantastic racing from our former GRP members.

John Graves and Ben Davison raced in the Men's Double Sculls after having prepared for the World Championships at Craftsbury this summer, coached by former GRP athlete Peter Graves. The double finished third in their heat with a time of 6:16, only a second and a half off of first place which sent them to the repechage. After winning their rep and advancing to the A/B Semifinal, they then moved to the B final where they finished second, placing 8th overall. Elizabeth Sonshine raced in the Women's Quadruple Sculls where they placed third in their heat with a time of 6:27, only a second off of first place which also sent them to the repechage. After winning their rep they advanced to the A final where they placed fifth overall. Erik Frid raced in the Men's Quadruple Sculls where they finished third in the C Level Final. Andrew Reed raced in seven seat of the Men's 8+ which placed second in their heat with a time of 5:28, less than a second and a half off of first. After then winning their repechage, the 8+ advanced to the A final where they won silver medals for the US.

It was a great week of racing from all US athletes and we're especially proud of our GRP alumni. Several of them will now be racing at the Head of the Charles, the second leg of the Lotman Challenge. The final leg of the Lotman Challenge will be the Head of the Schuylkill where a $9,000 grand prize will be on the line. Good luck to everyone during their fall season!
