Craftsbury Outdoor Center Seeks Assistant Junior Coach

The Craftsbury Outdoor Center is looking to hire an assistant coach to work with its junior and Bill Koch League Nordic skiing programs. The Center’s youth programming serves skiers ages 6 to 18, offers year-round practices, and encompasses a wide range of abilities and goals. The assistant coach would work closely with head junior/BKL coach Anna Schulz, biathlon coach Sam Dougherty, and director of skiing Pepa Miloucheva.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Running regular practices with athletes (various age groups)

  • Helping develop practice plans for any given group

  • Assisting in managing and maintaining equipment

  • Assisting with occasional race-day and event preparations

  • Coaching and helping to organize camps

  • Assisting with communication and program organization

Required qualifications include the following:

  • Prior experience coaching skiing at the junior or higher level

  • Experience cross country ski racing at a collegiate or higher level

  • High familiarity with waxing and equipment

  • Outstanding communication skills

  • Ability to work with varied age groups and abilities

  • Willingness to obtain necessary certifications (such as First Aid /CPR)

  • Willingness to perform other tasks as needed

The ideal candidate:  

  • Is highly knowledgeable and passionate about skiing

  • Loves working with kids

  • Has lots of energy and enthusiasm

  • Is organized and can maintain order in chaotic settings

  • Can adapt on the on fly to adjust for inclement weather and other unexpected obstacles

  • Has experience with biathlon and mountain biking

  • Has various other skills and is happy to jump into other tasks around the Outdoor Center

This position is anticipated to be full-time and year-round (May 2016 – April 2017): it may be filled by one full-time candidate or multiple part-time candidates. The highest workloads are from June – August and November – March. There is room for some flexibility in the schedule, but candidates must be available on weekends and during after-school hours during the school year. The successful candidate will be eager to employ other skills as opportunities arise at the Outdoor Center. Wages are commensurate with experience.
