DEP - December 3: Still not skiing (and other updates)

Snowmaking and snow farming/distribution temperatures have have been hard to come by this fall.

Last updated 3 Dec 2020

Opening Day:

This year has proven to be challenging in so many ways—and a lack of early snow for skiing can be added to the list. While we do have the snow that we stored over the summer, it is not yet clear when we’ll have the frozen trail conditions that we need for spreading the snow and opening to the public. And while we have made some fresh snow, the window of cold temps was not a large one. With warm weather coming, we don’t want to spread that fresh snow just to have it melt in a week.

So, as of this time, we do not yet have an opening date for public skiing at Craftsbury. Please watch the website for the latest info.

Starting December 2 - Reservations to use the trails for any activity

Effective December 2, reservations will be required for anyone who hopes to use Craftsbury for the day, for any activity - even annual members.

The state now requires ski areas to keep an electronic record of all people using the facilities on any given day. In addition, we need to be sure that our total numbers allow for appropriate distancing between users on the trail. This will be especially crucial when the skiable terrain is limited, like in the early days of the season.

To accomplish both of these things, we will be introducing a system of reservations to meet the state contact tracing requirements. This system will also limit the number of users on trail at any given time.

Cooperation or Closure:

Some of you will remember last March when the pandemic was closing in on us all. The Center really wanted to remain open so that people could get fresh air and exercise. Unfortunately we were forced to close early because people were ignoring safety guidelines, disregarding travel restrictions, congregating, and chatting closely with friends. We do not want to have that happen again this winter.

We really want to provide skiing for our community this winter. In order to do so, we need your support:

  • Help us while we work to open by not skiing before our official opening.

  • Once we open, help us remain open by vigilantly adhering to all state and local health guidelines.

  • Stay up to date during this very dynamic situation. Follow on our policies at craftsbury.com/covid and craftsbury.com/winterops

  • Double check the website before coming to the Center for any changes

  • Reserve your slot to ski

Together we can ensure that we can safely enjoy winter. And now, let’s get the snow dances going!
