2018 Sculling Interns

Sculling camps have now been underway for just over a month, and those of you who have already attended camps (or CommRow) have no doubt been assisted by our fantastic interns. Each year, high school and collegiate rowers from around the country apply for our student internship program, and while it was difficult to select only 16 from an excellent pool of applicants, we're thrilled to announce our 2018 interns: 

Returning Interns

Max Borrmann, May 29 - June 15

Max Borrmann is a rising junior at Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont. Max is originally from Northeast Ohio, not too far from Cleveland. Max started sweep rowing as a novice during the fall of his first year at Middlebury. He began learning how to scull as an intern at Craftsbury last summer. In addition to rowing, Max is an avid runner. Max is looking forward to being back at Craftsbury this summer, sculling and working with campers and coaches on Great Hosmer Pond.

Jon Hoey, June 17 - July 2
Jon Hoey is a rising sophomore at Middlebury College in Vermont where he intends to study Economics.  He began his rowing career at St. John’s High School in Shrewsbury, MA in the fall of freshman year and has loved the sport ever since.  While Jon mostly rows sweep in-season, during the summer he sculls at the QRC in Worcester, MA.  This is Jon’s third summer interning at Craftsbury and he is more excited than ever to meet, work, and row with new people. 

Josie Konopka, July 8 - 20
Josie started rowing the summer before her freshman year of high school and has continued to row for all four years. This year, she graduated from the Episcopal Academy and will attend the University of Pennsylvania this coming fall. Josie has experience in both sculling and sweeping and is looking forward to what she can learn at Craftsbury. 

Andrew Maritan, May 29 - June 8 and August 26 - September 7
Andrew is from Medfield, Massachusetts and currently attends Middlebury College where he studies Biology. He transitioned from swimming to rowing his freshman year and quickly fell in love with this water sport. He is currently the captain of the Middlebury Crew Team. This is his second year at Craftsbury and he looks forward to improving his technical rowing while meeting rowers from all over the country while here.

Alexei Sondergeld, May 10 - 25
Alexei graduated from UConn with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He will be attending Boston University as a Ph.D. student beginning in the fall, and is looking forward to rowing regularly on the Charles River. He competed on Riverfront Recapture’s juniors sweep team from 2012 to 2016 and continues to scull competitively. He became a sculling addict from the first day that he ever rowed a single and saved enough to buy his own single. Competing in an open-water sculling event is next on Alexei’s list of lifetime goals.

First-Time Interns 

Lindsay Albert, July 8 - 20
Lindsay just finished her senior year at Lexington High School, in Massachusetts.  She began rowing as a novice at CRI in 2016 and just finished her first full year on the varsity team.  Before discovering rowing, Lindsay trained as a competitive gymnast for twelve years.  She will be attending Boston University in the fall, where she will continue rowing on the varsity lightweight team. This will be her second time at Craftsbury, and she's super stoked to be back!

Valerie Blakely, August 19 - 26
Valerie is a rising junior at Middlebury College where she rows on the women's crew team. She started rowing after playing volleyball for nine years, and her first time ever in a boat was at a sculling camp here at Craftsbury two years ago. She is majoring in Environmental Studies with a focus in Philosophy, and is minoring in Biology. She is excited about being at Craftsbury because it means spending time outside, learning more about sculling, and getting to know lots of new people.  

Susanna Bruce, August 5 - 17
Susanna Bruce is an upcoming senior at Easton High School in Easton Maryland. She rows for a club team located there called Freedom Rowers. She began rowing her freshman year and, in the beginning of her junior year, she was named team captain. Susanna joined the rowing team to cross-train for her competitive swim career, but ended up falling in love with the sport, especially the sculling aspect. She has been sculling since her sophomore year and most notably attended the Youth Regional Challenged wherein she raced in a quad. This summer, Susanna is planning on attending the Ready Set Row Dev camp, in addition to being an intern. At Craftsbury, she wishes improve her technique and gain more knowledge about the sport to help because she plans on rowing in college. 

Kathryn Campbell, August 19 - 31
Kathryn is in grade 11 at Citadel High School in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She started recreational rowing in the summer of 2016 at Halifax Rowing Club, and started competing in the fall. She fell in love with the being on the water after her first row. She learned to row in eights, then moved to small boats once she made team Nova Scotia. Other than rowing she loves to be outside doing anything physically active such as swimming, skiing, snowboarding, and off trail biking. 

Lily Devereux, May 18 - 25
Lily is a rising senior at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY where she is a biochemistry major. She began varsity rowing as a walk-on at the beginning of her freshman year and has been a member of the team ever since. She is very new to sculling but is excited to learn new skills and put them to use as a counselor this summer at Hosmer Point camp just up the road! Outside of rowing, she is passionate about being outdoors and helping out on her family’s farm in Jericho, VT. 

Elias Finkelstein, June 22 - July 2
Elias is a rising junior at Georgetown Day School in Washington D.C. He rows on his school team and with a local rowing club. Elias began sweeping in eighth grade but has been sculling at Craftsbury/Hosmer Point for the last five summers. This will be Elias’ first time interning at Craftsbury and he is excited to learn as much as he can.

Jackson Hardin, July 22 - August 3
Jackson graduated from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in 2018, and is going on to the Cornell School of Engineering as a rower and prospective mechanical engineering major. He first learned to row in eighth grade on the Charles River with Community Rowing, Inc. His freshman year he began to compete on the varsity for the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, taking 5th place at Northeast Youth Championships in the 4+ his 2017 spring season. Jackson frequently spends time at Craftsbury competing and training in both rowing and cross-country skiing, and can’t wait to be back.

Abigail Hong, August 5 - 17
Abby will be a senior at The Ellis School for girls in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She started rowing in 7th grade and primarily sculls. Her favorite memories include placing 2nd at the Canadian Henley in the U17 2x and rowing a double with her coach at Club Nationals. This is her first year at Craftsbury, and she is very excited to meet new rowers. In her free time, Abby enjoys playing the cello and eating ice cream. 

Caitlin Kean, June 8 - June 22
Caitlin started rowing with Shrewsbury High School, where she rowed for eight seasons and was captain for her last two. At Shrewsbury, Caitlin only rowed in eights, however she started to learn to scull last summer at Craftsbury. Next year she will be rowing for WPI and majoring in Environmental Engineering and Business (Go Goats!). Besides rowing, she love swimming and any type of CrossFit. She can’t wait to be an intern for Craftsbury and is looking forward to further developing her technique.

Callum Rocchio, July 22 - August 3
Callum is from Stowe, Vermont, which is about 45 minutes from Craftsbury. He attended Rice Memorial High School in Burlington and graduated last summer. He learned to scull recreationally at Craftsbury through the community rowing program two summers ago. He is currently finishing his first year at the University of Edinburgh where he studies International Relations. He began rowing competitively as a novice this fall among eleven other first and second years who had little to no previous experience. They have had a successful year so far, winning the Inverness Head and Head of the River Race. Callum is really looking forward to spending time at Craftsbury again and improving on the water.

Cate Rooney, August 5 - 17
Cate is from Hanover, NH, and this summer will be her first time at Craftsbury. She will be graduating from Hanover High School on June 15th, and she will be taking a gap year before attending Bates College as a member of the Class of 2023. She loves to row; she has been rowing on her school and club team, as well as with her dad, for five years. She has moved from her school's third boat her sophomore year, to the second boat her junior year, to the first boat her senior year. She has competed in several regattas with her school team, including the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association (NEIRA) Championships, as well as with her club team and with her dad. She and her dad have rowed in their double in the Head of the Charles Regatta for the past two years. Cate loves rowing so much, and she is very excited to share her passion with everyone at Craftsbury this summer!
