2015 Sculling Interns

Last Updated: 09.Jun.2015

We're pleased to welcome our 2015 sculling interns, if somewhat belatedly. Once again, we're lucky to have a great crop of waterfront sculling staff this summer. Meet the interns who'll be helping our campers this summer:

Liam Doughty, May 14 – 24
Liam has five years of rowing experience starting at St. John the Baptist DHS, since then he has been affiliated with Long Island Rowing Club, East End Rowing, and most recently University of Connecticut Men’s Crew. During his high school career he was a four year varsity athlete, two year captain, CHSAA All-Academic Team member, New York All-State, MVP, and earned second and third place finishes at New York State Championships, as well as, a second place finish at the inaugural National Schools’ Championship. Liam has most of his racing experience in fours, quads, and pairs; while also training extensively in singles under the guidance of elite coaches at Long Island Rowing Club and East End Rowing.

Katie Williams, May 14 – 24
Katie has just finished her freshmen year at St. Mary's College of Maryland where she is studying biology. Katie has been rowing for 5years, she currently rows for the St. Mary's club crew team. This will be her second time interning at Craftsbury, she has attended the camp as a camper 3 times and multiple times as a guest.

Victoria Carroll, May 24 – June 7
Victoria is a junior at Georgetown University where she rows for the Women's Varsity Rowing team. She started rowing in 8th grade at Mercer Junior Rowing Club near her home town of Cranbury, New Jersey. At Georgetown, Victoria is majoring in Psychology and minoring in French. Last summer, Victoria worked at a girls' residential camp for girls called Camp Kippewa in Monmouth, Maine. After her internship at Craftsbury this summer, Victoria will be studying abroad in Tours, France for six weeks. Victoria was a camper at Craftsbury for two years and is very excited to work here an an intern this summer.

Jonah Conlin, May 24 – June 7
I grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts and began rowing in high school. I wasn't any kind of athlete before crew but grew to enjoy the discipline of the sport and how anyone who comes to it can be successful with enough effort. I graduated from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in 2014 and began school at Middlebury College in February of this year. Since matriculating, I've joined the college's crew team and plan to continue through all four years.

Chandler Washburn, June 7 – July 3
I was fortunate enough to grow up watching my dad coach my brothers in rowing. Naturally, I wanted to follow in their footsteps. I started rowing for my dad at Phillips Academy as a freshman. That year I stroked the 2nd boat and we came in 3rd at NEIRAs. The following year I was able to move up and stroke the 1st boat to a first place finish at NEIRAs. Now I am currently rowing in stroke seat in the 1st boat at the Episcopal School of Jacksonville for my dad.

Spencer James, June 7 – 21
This fall, I will be entering my senior year at New Trier High School in the north suburbs of Chicago. I have rowed for my high school team since freshman year, and I am currently in the recruitment process of rowing in college. In college, I plan on focusing on the sciences, particularly biology. My other activities include wrestling for my high school team, road biking, and intramural soccer.

Erika Sloan, June 21 – July 17
I’m a senior at Middlebury College in Vermont, where I’ve been rowing since day one of my freshman year. Before that, I rowed for four years at Simsbury High School. I’m pre-med and studying Classics, and therefore love when shells have Latin or mythological names. Though I feel most at home in the bow seat of an 8+, there’s something indescribably thrilling about rowing a single.

Claire Goffinet, June 21 – July 3
I am graduating from high school this May and plan to continue rowing in College. I have been a rower on Space Coast Crew (in central Florida) for four years. This year I was voted team captain.

Mackenzie Beckman, July 5 – 17
Mackenzie is a sophomore in high school in Pennsylvania. She has been rowing competitively for two years. She sculls and sweeps at Whitemarsh Boat Club, Bachelors Barge, and at Vesper Boat Club. She attended Craftsbury as a camper in the summer of 2014. This will be her first year interning at the Outdoor Center.

Saylor Strugar, July 19 – August 2
Saylor is a sophomore at Fairview High School in Boulder, Colorado. She has been rowing and sculling for two years with Colorado Junior Crew. She has spent every summer at a lake in Vermont and adores everything to do with water.

Noelle Perry, July 19 – August 2
I am currently a senior at Grosse Pointe South High School in Michigan. I am committed to Boston University on scholarship for rowing. I have been rowing since my freshmen year and was both sculling and sweeping. I really fell in love with sculling after attending Junior National Team Development camp in 2013 and even more when I attended Selection camp the following summer. Spending time in a single is my favorite past time. As my rowing developed (and continues too) I grow more certain that it is something I can never see myself not participating in. It is something I have grown to love as well as the people I have met because of it.

Jenny McIlvane, August 2 – August 28 (and maybe through the beginning of September)
Jenny is a 2015 graduate from Cape Cod Tech. Jenny has been rowing for five years and looks to further her rowing career. In the Fall season she won the Junior Women's 1x at the Textile River Regatta, got 3rd place at the U19 Women's 1x at the Head of The Quinobequin, and raced the youth single at the Head of The Charles. She has been training with Impact Performance for two hours every day for the past six months.

Jonathon Hoey, August 2 – 14
I live in Sutton, MA, and attend St. John's High School in Shrewsbury, MA, and I have been rowing for three years now. I began rowing for my high school freshman year at the novice level, and have spent my last two years rowing for the varsity team. My experience has been limited thus far to sweeping, and I am excited to practice sculling for the first time this summer. What inspired me to row crew was physical fitness. During my last year of middle school I decided to try rowing, and I immediately found it more difficult than anticipated, but the sport grew on me. Now I love it, and I enjoy the feeling of training having paid off. I hope to row at the collegiate level, and I believe that rowing will be a significant part of the rest of my life.

Chelsea Foster, August 16 – 28
Chelsea, from Avon, Connecticut, began rowing five years ago as a junior for Avon High School. She is currently a senior attending Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts, where she is majoring in Public Relations and Marketing, and has been rowing in the V1 8+ since the fall of her freshman year. She was also captain of her high school basketball and crew teams as a senior, and is currently a co-captain of the Simmons Crew team and has been since her sophomore year. Aside from crew, Chelsea enjoys biking, kayaking, swimming, hiking and playing basketball in her free time. This summer will be her second as an intern for Craftsbury.

Rebecca Waldorf, September 4 – September 20
From learning the basics on a dock box with CYC masters rower Craig Leeds ten years ago, to competing with CYC Juniors under coaches Guillermo Lemus and Jill Calbi, I was lucky to learn the sport in a small, sculling-focused program. After high school, I've coxed for the University of Oregon club team (under coach Carly Schmidt) and most recently the walk-on athletes on UCSD Men’s team under coaches Zach Johnson, Jeff Collett, and Brian Robison. I look forward to the sculling camps this summer and being a resource during your stay here at Craftsbury. Although I’ve been spoiled with frequent dolphin sightings in Mission Bay CA, Vermont’s lush trees & calm water will be a welcome change.
