Green Racing Project
VISION
The Craftsbury Green Racing Project fills the gap that exists after collegiate athletics for the outdoor, endurance sports of biathlon, nordic skiing, rowing, and running. It serves as a bridge from collegiate racing to national and international level competition.
Our vision is that the Craftsbury Green Racing Project athletes will blend the uncompromising virtues of pursuing athletics at the highest level with the conscientious values of being a considerate member of a larger community. GRP athletes will further their own mission while also contributing to the larger one that supports and surrounds them. In the end, the Craftsbury Green Racing Project will build some of the best athletes in the world who also have an understanding of their impact and involvement in both the communities that surround them and the physical environment they live in.
In a more practical sense, the GRP provides both a top tier training situation as well as an environment for personal growth that pivots around a supportive community and opportunities to use their skills, with a focus on projects related to the Craftsbury Outdoor Center’s mission to:
to support and promote participation and excellence in lifelong sports with a special focus on rowing, running, Nordic skiing and biathlon
to use and teach sustainable practices
to protect and manage the surrounding land, lake and trails
GOALS
Generally speaking, the GRP has both athletic and ideological goals for its athletes. Here are some of the tenets we stand by:
The GRP provides a high-level training experience for post-collegiate athletes who aim to achieve the highest levels of competition in Biathlon, Nordic skiing, and Rowing. In this pursuit, athletes are provided, housing, coaching, food, travel, and equipment to make their pursuit possible.
The GRP creates a unique, living situation in which each professional athlete can also thrive in the non-training aspects of life, learning new skills, gaining experience, taking responsibility, and maintaining a healthy balance between training and life.
The GRP provides a healthy life balance for competitive athletes working to achieve their greatest potential.
GRP athletes work toward the mission of the Outdoor Center in all aspects of life.
In exchange for coaching, travel support, and room & board, GRP athletes take on projects that contribute to the work of the Center. GRP projects in the past have included: ski trail mapping and improvements, engineering and design work in building projects, construction of singletrack trails, coaching of youth skiers and mountain bikers, outreach to area schools, growing vegetables and raising animals to help provide food for the Dining Hall, organizing events and programs at the Center, design of the GRP website and clothing, blogging and writing articles for the website.
A GRP athlete combines self-motivation with a conscientious perspective in both his or her training and life.
