Training week of 7/3
Hi CSC squad! Thanks for your patience—summer is wild. This week:
EVERYONE:
Attendance form: you know the drill
Training plan: here and in the same place in googleland
No practices Tuesday: because ‘merica
Communication with coaches: masters, you have slightly more consistent coaching staff than the other groups, so this isn’t as relevant. Everyone else, though: please message/email Anna/Audrey/Jake/Rick/Ollie altogether (whether on Slack, which is preferable, or jrskiing@craftsbury.com email), as on any given day, different coaches are leading different groups. A note to just Anna does you no good if she’s off that day.
Hot weather policy: we do our best to follow the VPA rules around hot weather. You can read those here. Note that our setting is a little different than most VPA sports so we use our judgement to adjust accordingly. For example, rollerskiing on black pavement elevates our risk, while access to the lake for some chunks of some practices lowers it. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on slack on really hot days so you know if we have to cancel things.
EC RACE + HS COMP:
NEW PLAN for this weekend’s overnight:
Due to wet and unpredictable weather, we are NOT going to Victory this weekend.
But are ARE doing some rockin’ training + an overnight closer to home! This will enable us to pivot more easily if needed due to the weather. This also might feel a little more accessible to those of you who don’t have quite as much training experience and/or were feeling like Victory was a big commitment. You also don’t have to do the whole thing. Reach out to coaches with questions.
We will be crashing at a rustic cabin on Big Hosmer, accessed via canoe. In the event of thunder, it can also be accessed on foot with some mostly minimal negotiation of grazing cows. There is a roof; there are walls. There is not electricity or plumbing. We’ll send you a packing list but plan to bring your own sleeping bag and pad. Food will be provided (but it’s a good idea to bring a few of your own snacks). Thanks to the Dreissigacker family for letting us use this cabin!
On Saturday we’ll be run/hiking. On Sunday we’ll be classic rollerskiing on the roads + also doing some running. Anyone who does not have much rollerski experience can join the U14 rollerski practice on the loop on Sunday morning. Here’s the tentative timeline:
Saturday:
12:30pm: van leaves COC
1:00pm: van arrives @ Eden’s Crossing trailhead; meets some people there, then we all go for a merry jaunt. Yes, if you’re doing the overnight and your parents are driving you, you can stuff all your gear in the van/a coach vehicle, and your parents can kiss you goodbye for 24 hours. If you’re driving yourself, you can just caravan back to COC after.
4:00pm: van/crew heads back to COC. Non-overnighters get picked up at 4:30. Overnighters swim, shower if you want, eat some kind of dinner
by 7:00pm: paddling to cabin
nighttime: sleeps
Sunday
get up at cabin, potentially see what the coaches are like before coffee, eat breakfast in the boonies, dig holes to poop in, normal morning stuff
by 8-something: be paddling back to COC
9:00am: EITHER join U14 practice on the loop (over at 10:30) or depart for roll/run combo workout on the roads
~1:00pm: longer workout returns to COC. Chauffeurs may want to bring lunches…
Payment: will just need to cover dinner/breakfast food. We’ll tally it up post-trip.
Overnight in the White Mts:
We had penciled in either 7/26-7/27 OR 7/27-7/28… and were leaning toward the first but now there’s some momentum toward the second… fill out the attendance form on this subject, please.
This one will be hike/running both days
We’ll be straight up camping for this one—also pretty cheap
Morning practices @ 8:30 or 9:00: yup, there’s still some flux here as we modify for overlapping with college, managing the heat, access gym space, etc.
Lake Placid Training camp: other than booking lodging (same as last year) for August 14-18, we haven’t gotten into planning this trip a whole lot. More to come, but let us know on the attendance form what you’re thinking. Priority for this trip goes to older + more experienced skiers… but that shouldn’t scare away younger skiers, as it’s all dependent on space. Since we don’t get free lodging for this, it’s a bit more expensive.
U14:
Optional Saturday practice: feel free to join the junior squad for a hike/run on Saturday afternoon. Parents welcome. But also, no pressure.
No overnight for you yet: but maybe we’ll do one with this crew someday soon!
BKL:
It’s going to be hot this week! Be prepared with a water bottle, towel, and change of clothes for after practice in case you get wet.
MASTERS:
Note no TNR this week due to the 4th.
See you soon!
