The Center has been bustling with activities over the past week, providing racing opportunities for competitors of all ages. The SuperTour Finals (STF) were in town, which allowed CNSC juniors to toe the line with Olympians and National Champions and created incredibly competitive fields.
The SuperTour racing kicked off last Friday with a classic sprint. In the women’s race, Phoebe Sweet was 31st (.5 seconds from qualifying for the open heats and the 4th U18) and Quincy Massey-Bierman was 68th (2nd U16). In the men’s race, Finn Sweet was 77th (also the 2nd U16). In Saturday’s mass start 15k skate race, Griffin Wright was 78th (4th U18) and Makail Tipton was 111th (5th U16).
Sunday was relay day. The relay was mixed gender and mixed technique. Finn and Griffin raced with GRP women Liz Guiney and Kait Miller, placing 13th. Trey Jones, Quincy, Jack Young, and Callie Young teamed up, placing 21st. Another CNSC team was comprised of Greyson Davis, Adrienne Remick, Makail, and Marika Massey-Bierman. They finished 30th. The SuperTour Finals racing concluded with the long distance races. The junior girls raced a 20k mass start classic race. Phoebe was 4th and Marika was 19th.
In addition to the STF races there two separate citizens’ races: the Spring Fling and Mansfield Nordic Club’s New England Club Relay. Saturday’s Spring Fling offered 12.5k and 25k skate mass starts, as well as a 3k BKL race. Anika Leahy raced the women’s 12.5k and finished 16th (the 9th BKL’er). In the men’s 12.5k , STF Chief of Competition and organizer Ollie Burruss took a brief break from his duties and raced to the win, while Owen Jones was 13th. In the BKL race, Cormac Leahy took the win, with Orion Cenkl in hot pursuit. Charlie Kehler was 14th, Charlie Isselhardt was 23rd (with an impressive finishing kick!) and Thomas Kehler was 26th. Max Demaine was 27th, Maeda Urie was 39th, and Elijah Davis was 40th.
Sunday brought relay racing for all! The NE Club Relay was divided in to three divisions, >199 cumulative years old and <200 cumulative years old, and BKL. Each team that competed came up with excellently crafted names. In the BKL race, Team C02 finished 2nd. This team was Owen, Orion, Charlie Krebs, and Cormac. On Your Left was 5th, with Leo Circosta, Linden Stelma-Leonard, Alan Moody, and Sage Grossi. In 11th place was the Snow Sisters, which consisted of Emily Linton, Isabel Linton, Anika Leahy, and Siri Dunn. Team Faster than Snails was 13th, with Ruth Krebs, Amelia Circosta, Estherline Carlson, and Anya Carlson. Also of note, junior coach Audrey Mangan teamed up with Mark Isselhardt, Trina Hosmer, and Keith Woodward for 2nd place in the >199 mixed division, under the team name “208 is the new 150”.
Congratulations to these juniors and all the juniors for an incredible racing season! The racing is over, but skiing and fun will continue as long as the snow does! See results from all the races here.
