Juniors and BKL'ers Perform Well on Home Turf

The Eastern Cup circuit is in full swing! Due to low snow at the Trapp Family Lodge last week, the third Eastern Cup weekend was moved to Craftsbury. The Eastern Cup races consisted of classic interval start events on Saturday and skate mass start races on Sunday. BKL’ers got the opportunity to put on a race bib and rip it up on Saturday!
Saturday morning dawned cold and crisp, perfect for classic skiing. The women raced 5k and it was a big field, as the UVM carnival was combined with the Eastern Cup, pitting juniors against top college skiers. Phoebe Sweet was the first CNSC junior across the line in 17th and the 1st U18. Callie Young, fresh off the plane from Finland, was 34th (7th U18) and Marika Massey-Bierman was 54th (5th U20). Adrienne Remick was 63rd (2nd U16) and Quincy Massey-Bierman was 64th (3rd U16). Jordi Kulis was 106th (13th U20), Claire Ellis was 129th (25th U18), and Aliza Wright was 151st (23rd U16).
In the men’s 10k, Griffin Wright was 54th (5th U18) and Nathaniel Wells was 144th (30th U18). CNSC had a strong presence in the U16 boys 5k race, with solid performances from U16s and U14s alike. This weekend marked many of the U14’s first Eastern Cup races. Finn Sweet was 2nd, followed by Trey Jones in 4th (1st U14). Jack Young was 13th and Greyson Davis was 18th. Next was a group of U14’s, with Cormac Leahy in 19th (2nd U14), Orion Cenkl in 24th (3rd U14), Daymien Ide in 25th (4th U14), and Tzevi Schwartz in 26th (5th U14). Aiden Casey was 28th.
Sunday brought warmer temperatures, a flurry of new snow, and skate mass start races for all. The day kicked off with the U16 boys 5k, which was once again dominated by a sea of green. Finn once again crossed the line second and was followed by Trey in 6th (1st U14). Cormac was 20th (3rd U14), Grayson was 23rd, and Makail Tipton was 24th. Orion was 25th (4th U14), Tzevi was 29th (5th U14), and Daymien was 34th (8th U14). In the U16 girls 5k, Quincy was 2nd, less than three seconds from 1st, and Adrienne was 7th.
The women raced a two lap 10k. Phoebe led the way for CNSC in 7th (5th U18) and Marika in 30th (7th U20). The men went around the 5k loop three times for 5k. Bjorn Westervelt was 23rd overall and the 13th U18.
On Saturday, the BKL’ers hit the trails with skate races for all! The lollipop field was entirely a Craftsbury crew with Beck Tower-Pierce, Jonah Wohlberg, Kaisa Weaver, Joe Krebs, and Sylas Weaver all racing for the coveted lollipops! In the 1st and 2nd grade boys race, the podium was Stig Linck, James Kehler, and Hollis Allen. In the 1st/2nd girls race, Aemilia Terrone led the way for Craftsbury in 2nd, followed by Ava Stratman in 3rd, Evelyn Moline in 4th, and Ada Allen in 5th. In the 3rd and 4th grade boys race, Thomas Kehler was first across the line, followed by Zeke Wohlberg in 2nd, Sam Dunn in 3rd, and brothers Asa and Eli Davis in 4th and 5th. In the 3rd and 4th grade girls race, Effie Dunn was 2nd, Kalliope Augsberger was 3rd (on her birthday!), Livia Padulo was 4th, and Miriam Serota Winston was 5th. In the 5th and 6th grade boys race, Owen Jones, Leo Circosta, and Sage Grossi made up the podium, followed by Alan Moody in 5th, Charlie Kehler in 6th, and Thaeden Augsberger in 9th. There was another Craftsbury podium in the 5th and 6th grade girls race, comprised of Anika Leahy, Ruth Krebs, and Amelia Circosta. Isabel Linton was close behind in 4th and Evvi Tower-Pierce was 8th. In the 7th and 8th grade boys race, Linden Stelma-Leonard was 2nd, Charles Krebs was 3rd, Finn Tower-Pierce was 4th, and Aiden Moffatt was 5th.
