Home Sweet Craftsbury

As I return to Craftsbury for my second summer, and delve deeper into a set training routine, I am reminded of why this is such a great place to train and live. First off and most importantly for a big guy like me is the food. The kitchen staff here does an absolutely phenomenal job, making fresh bread, along with a variety of meals every day, three times a day.Secondly is the people.  Almost everyone remembers me from last year, and is asking about school, future plans, and how my rowing season went.  This is just something you don't always get in a larger club atmosphere. Then there are the coaches and equipment.  Coach Larry Gluckman has been coaching for significantly longer than I have been alive, and it shows. He knows just about everyone in the rowing world. Lisa Schlenker, Olympian and former national team rower, is helping us out, as well as Troy Howell, the boat man for the camp who knows about and has rowed pretty much every boat out there.Probably the most appealing difference to me is the Craftsbury calm. It has been very rare in my rowing experience to have an atmosphere dedicated almost entirely to rowing, where I can go row for two hours in peace with little danger of being waked or having to deal with a bunch of other crews yelling or needing space. Off the water too, everything we do is aimed at improving us as athletes and rowers. Needless to say I am very happy to be back in the Northeast Kingdom, and very grateful for another chance to try out for the U23 national team.
